ABOUT AROMATHERAPY Aromatherapy has different meanings to different people. Some think of it as a beauty treatment that smells nice, others view it as an effective treatment for many health problems. The word ‘aromatherapy’ simply means ‘treatment with the use of fragrance’ so both definitions could be viewed as correct. The therapy goes back thousands of years – the Egyptians used aromatics as religious offerings, as well as in the embalming of their dead. The Greeks were also known to use herbs and essential oils for their health and beauty. The ‘modern’ father of Aromatherapy was Rene Maurice Gattefosse, a French chemist who discovered the healing properties of Lavender oil when he burned himself badly at work and went on to develop his work using soldiers injured in the First World War. Aromatherapy is the use of essential oils extracted from herbs, flowers, fruit and trees. These oils are extremely pure and natural and most are too concentrated to use neat on the skin so they are diluted in carrier oil before being applied to the body using massage. This can be given to the full body or just a specific area which may be causing problems, e.g. back and shoulders. This is traditionally quite a gentle massage although the pressure can be adjusted to suit the individual client – some people prefer a firmer touch and sometimes this is needed to ‘iron out’ all those stresses and strains! As with all holistic therapies, Aromatherapy massage aims to assist the body to naturally heal itself and is popular for stress relief, particularly with those who may suffer from muscular aches and pains, digestive problems and insomnia.
