REIKI FOR ANIMALS Not only is Reiki an effective therapy for humans but also for animals. They seem to be very receptive to it and it can be a useful tool when used alongside conventional veterinary treatment. Animals are very open to energy therapies and, as there is no benefit to them in being unwell, will accept anything that helps their bodies to heal. Reiki can assist in pain management as well as emotional and behavioural issues and, as with humans, is good for palliative care when an animal is suffering from a terminal illness. Any animal can be treated including dogs, cats, horses and smaller pets - even reptiles and fish! Although many animals will accept hands-on treatment, the initial session may start with the therapist working at a distance from the animal until a mutually trusting relationship has been established. Animals will generally recognise the energy being sent to them and will choose how close they want to get, often offering the part of their body that they would like to be treated. As animals are very sensitive to their surroundings, Reiki will be offered in their own home to give maximum benefit. Treatments will usually last around an hour, as with humans, although some animals may choose when to end the session if they decide that they have had enough. Please note: to comply with the Veterinary Surgery Act of 1966 I am unable to diagnose illnesses or prescribe treatment and I will need to know that you have the full support and consent of your vet before I will be able to give a Reiki treatment to your animal.
